The Society of Thoracic Surgeons gives hospital highest possible rating

WellSpan Health announced today that WellSpan York Hospital has achieved a three-star rating – the highest possible – by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for excellence in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

This recognition places WellSpan York Hospital among leading institutions for achieving and improving quality outcomes.

“We are grateful to be recognized for our clinical quality for a program that is as important to the community as cardiac surgery,” said Keith Noll, senior vice president, WellSpan Health and president, WellSpan York Hospital. “We are always working to make strides to improve in this area, and this recent data shows that we are moving in the right direction in our effort to constantly provide the best outcomes possible for our patients.”

Using a comprehensive rating system, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons rates the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. WellSpan York Hospital attained its overall three-star rating based on data collected from July 2015 to June 2016. Four main areas are assessed, including use of the internal mammary artery (IMA), which may be grafted during CABG surgeries.

These surgeries are performed to treat coronary artery disease. The procedure involves bypassing a portion of an artery that has been narrowed or blocked by plaque buildup (atherosclerosis) to restore blood flow to the heart.
