Designation follows WellSpan York Hospital’s certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center

York County area residents now have access to the highest level of comprehensive stroke care in their community – from diagnosis and treatment to inpatient rehabilitation.

WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital announced today that it has been awarded the inpatient Stroke Specialty Program accreditation, by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International.

“This is a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to providing excellent care to all of our patients, specifically those who have experienced the life-altering effects of a stroke,” said Barbara Yarrish, senior vice president of post-acute services for WellSpan Health, and president of WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and leading cause of adult disability in the nation, according to AHA/ASA.

Yarrish noted that the three-year CARF accreditation is the latest example of WellSpan’s comprehensive, coordinated stroke care network. Last year, WellSpan York Hospital achieved the prestigious Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA).

WellSpan’s network also includes certified Primary Stroke Centers at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital – all recognized by The Joint Commission and the AHA/ASA as having made exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care.

“WellSpan is driven to provide comprehensive care for stroke patients in our community,” Yarrish said. “To that end, we also work closely with WellSpan York Hospital to ensure that stroke patients receive the right care, in the right environment – whether that’s York County’s leading acute-care facility or our outstanding surgery and rehabilitation hospital.”

To achieve the CARF Stroke Specialty Program accreditation, programs take a partnership approach that engages patients and their families – focusing on prevention, minimizing impairment, reducing activity limitations and maximizing the participation and quality of life of individuals who have sustained a stroke.

WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital underwent a rigorous peer review process to achieve the designation, demonstrating its commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable and of the highest quality.

This is the third CARF accreditation for WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital. It has been reaccredited as a Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital for adults and accredited for its brain injury specialty program, which uniquely positions the hospital to meet the community’s need to provide specialized care to brain injury patients.

WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital also offers outpatient rehabilitation for stroke patients who have returned home but require ongoing therapy.
