WellSpan Health announced today that a WellSpan York Hospital nurse was selected as a winner at the prestigious “Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania.”

At the organization’s 27th annual gala, Emily Huggins, manager of WellSpan York Hospital’s forensic nurse examiner program was announced as the winner in the “Community Nursing” category.

Huggins was one of three category finalists and seven nominees from WellSpan Health. The finalists were whittled down from a group of more than 100 nominees statewide.

“Our work is so important to help the community,” Huggins said. “Sometimes we nurses forget to stop and think ‘wow we do great work to help people every day.’ This event allowed us to do that. Now, to have the extra benefit of bringing this great award back to WellSpan York Hospital – it’s unbelievable and represents the great work all of us do.”

Huggins is also known as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) nurse, providing specialized care for patients who are victims of sexual assault and physical abuse. SAFE nurses also have specialized knowledge of the legal system and skills in evaluation, documentation and injury identification.

“Emily has been leading very important work,” said Astrid Davis, vice president of patient care services, WellSpan York Hospital, who won the Nightingale Award for nursing administration 2010. “Our SAFE program has helped and supported so many in a profound way during very difficult times. Emily’s tireless work to help others embodies community nursing and her recognition through this award is certainly well-deserved.”

The demands of Huggins’ work for the community will be further met with the opening of the new SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Exam) Suite in early 2017, a part of WellSpan York Hospital’s $50 million Emergency Department renovation project. The suite will include a private room with forensic examination capabilities.

The “Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania” is a statewide, philanthropic organization whose purpose is to create, cultivate and support environments where professional nursing achievements are valued. Nightingale’s volunteer board and committees utilize gifts, donations, and annual gala proceeds to recognize excellence in a wide variety of nursing career paths, and financially contributes to the continuing nursing education at all levels in the commonwealth.
