The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have announced their latest overall hospital quality star ratings, and all WellSpan Hospitals have scored four or five stars.

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital both achieved five stars, the top rating provided by CMS. Only two other hospitals in the area received a five-star rating. Of the 3,355 hospitals to receive a star rating by CMS, fewer than 15% earned five stars.

“Our team has always been focused on quality care and patient safety, and achieving a five-star rating for the third time here in Chambersburg is proof of that,” said John Massimilla, president, WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. “We have been focused on infection control, patient safety, daily safety huddles and addressing any downward trends proactively. Quality, patient safety and outcomes are top priorities for us at WellSpan and the CMS star rating is a reflection of the commitment and hard work of our medical staff and the entire team.”

While WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital has earned five stars from CMS three times, this marks the first time that WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital has earned the rating. It is the result of a plan that was first put in place in 2016 to establish a culture of safety at the hospital.

“While our journey toward excellence began in 2016 with a focus on safety,  it expanded to quality outcomes and patient experience quickly,” said Tina Citro, president, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. “Our teams knew they were capable of providing the very best care for our patients, but they needed the support to remove the barriers preventing this success. Being recognized as one of the very best hospitals in the country validates our teams’ commitment to the community we serve.”

WellSpan Waynesboro, WellSpan Gettysburg, WellSpan York and WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital all achieved a four-star rating. While over half of hospitals across the country received three stars or less, no WellSpan Hospitals received lower than four stars.

CMS assigns its Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings to hospitals across the country based on their performance across five quality categories – mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. This is the first star ratings update since January 2020.
