WellSpan helps Hanover-area residents eat ‘heart healthy’ with grocery tour

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

With just one day of American Heart Month remaining, about a dozen Hanover-area residents made a special trip to the Giant supermarket Tuesday night to get an education on how to eat and shop heart healthy.

WellSpan Health held the free Heart Healthy Grocery Store Tour at the Baltimore Street Giant store in Hanover as part of the health system’s American Heart Month activities throughout February.

Julie Sokalski, a clinical dietician with WellSpan Cardiac Rehabilitation, combed the aisles – from produce to cereal – providing guidance and fielding questions on label reading and important ingredients to look out for, such as sodium.

“That’s our goal – to engage communities and empower residents to pursue heart-healthy eating,” said Sokalski. “Heart-healthy eating is for practically everyone. It’s amazing how small changes, such as eating more vegetables and fruits and selecting foods low in saturated and trans fats and sugar, can make a big difference and help improve peoples’ lives and wellbeing.”

A heart-healthy eating plan is full of foods that can lower your risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. This plan can help individuals stay at a healthy weight and manage cholesterol and blood pressure. It is part of a heart-healthy lifestyle that includes regular activity and not smoking.
