WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital completes 100th interventional cardiology procedure

March 29, 2019

WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital’s cardiology team recently treated its 100th coronary intervention patient since the hospital began offering advanced interventional care this past September.

With the recent expansion of cardiac services, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital now provides care that patients previously experiencing a life-threatening heart attack would have had to travel elsewhere to receive.

Staffed around-the-clock, the hospital’s new catheterization lab provides emergency and interventional coverage 24/7, 365 days a year. Interventional cardiologist Richard Howard, Jr., M.D., WellSpan Cardiology, oversees catheterization lab operations along with a team of cardiac clinicians and diagnostic imaging technicians.

“With the addition of advanced treatment procedures, patients can receive preventative care, diagnostics, medical and interventional treatments, and cardiac rehabilitation – all here in Gettysburg,” said Dr. Howard.

Providing these procedures locally means more than just convenience for patients and families. Often times it is a matter of life and death, explained Dr. Howard.

“The sooner we can open a blocked artery during a heart attack, the better a patient’s chances are of making a full recovery. Having this technology and expertise available locally is already having a significant impact on outcomes in our community.”

WellSpan Cardiology in Gettysburg provides diagnostic and interventional services including electrophysiology services to treat heart rhythm irregularities; diagnostic catheterization to view blockages around the heart; stress testing to diagnose heart disease; and electrocardiograms (EKGs) to understand the heart’s electrical signals.
