WellSpan expands patient access to new testing technology for breast cancer

Locations in York and Adams counties now offer state-of-the-art 3D imaging and testing system clinically proven to increase detection of breast cancers, decrease patient recalls for additional testing

WellSpan has expanded the availability of a state-of-the-art imaging and testing system for women’s breast care this week with the launch of the Genius™ 3D MAMMOGRAPHY™ exam at sites in York and Adams counties.

The 3D mammography technology is clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers as well as decrease the number of women who are asked to return for additional testing.

The system captures multiple images, or slices, of the breast from several angles, creating a multi-layered image. This is especially beneficial for patients with dense breast tissue. A physician can review the breast images, one layer at a time, almost like turning pages in a book, which allows them to make a more accurate diagnosis.

WellSpan’s Washington Street Health Center, located at 450 S. Washington St. in Gettysburg, and the WellSpan Women’s Imaging Center on the Apple Hill Health Campus, 35 Monument Road, York, join other WellSpan facilities that are now offering the new breast imaging system for certain patients.

WellSpan previously launched the system at hospitals and imaging centers in Lebanon and Lancaster counties in the second half of 2016.

“We are excited to bring this new imaging modality to patients in York and Adams counties,” said Douglas Arbittier, M.D., vice president of WellSpan’s Oncology Service Line. “This will certainly be beneficial to a subset of our patients, in whom traditional mammography is not as effective as 3D in detecting abnormalities.”

Large clinical studies in the U.S. and Europe have demonstrated the positive benefits of a Genius 3D exam. The largest study to date on breast cancer screening using the Genius exam was published in the June 25, 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Findings of the study included:

  • A 41 percent increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers.
  • A 29 percent increase in the detection of all breast cancers.
  • A 15 percent decrease in women recalled for additional imaging.

In addition, WellSpan is now offering the newly developed Affirm™ Prone Breast Biopsy System at its Women’s Imaging Center on the Apple Hill Health Campus in York. The prone biopsy system, with 3D imaging guidance, allows physicians to more precisely test breast lesions by giving them increased access and precision in the biopsy process.

Last year, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital became the first hospital in Pennsylvania to offer the combined resources of both a prone biopsy system with 3D imaging guidance.

If an exam reveals a lesion, the prone biopsy system allows radiologists to better target those lesions for further testing. As patients lie down on a table, the biopsy system provides 360-degree access to the breast tissue, as well as faster procedure times.
