WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital named top hospital for nurses

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital has achieved the Pathway to Excellence designation, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The designation recognizes the hospital for having a work environment where nurses can flourish and feel empowered. The designation demonstrates nursing job satisfaction at the hospital and identifies it as one of the best places for nurses to work, according to the ANCC.

“The Pathway to Excellence designation is great news for our patients,” said Carrie Willetts, senior vice president of WellSpan Health and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital president.  “It means they are being served by a nursing team that has high standards of quality and safety.”

The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the presence of six nursing standards including: shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, well-being and professional development.

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital is the first hospital in Lancaster County and only the sixth in the state to earn the designation. It is the second hospital in the WellSpan Health system to achieve the Pathway credential, joining WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. Just 171 hospitals across the country have earned the distinction.

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital underwent a year-long application and review process by the ANCC. The process documented the hospital’s initiatives to create a positive work environment, as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be integrated in the facility’s practices, policies and culture.

During the process, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital nurses submitted stories about how they look for areas of improvement, advocate for patients and improve the health of the community.

“The Pathway to Excellence designation shows our commitment to a thriving professional practice environment for nursing,” said Tina Citro, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.
