WellSpan encourages individuals to discard unused medications for Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Wednesday, October 25, 2017

WellSpan Health is encouraging members of the community to discard their unused medications either at one of the health system’s permanently set up collection points, or at one of the special collections taking place across central Pennsylvania this Saturday, Oct. 28, for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Year-round, anyone may drop off their unused prescription drugs at each of five designated WellSpan Pharmacy locations in Adams, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. This includes WellSpan’s newest pharmacy site at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, which opened earlier this year, as well as pharmacies at WellSpan York Hospital, the Apple Hill Medical Center, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and Fairfield in Adams County.

Making medication collection permanently available at these pharmacies, and helping to get the word out about other convenient disposal options available to area residents, are part of WellSpan’s efforts and commitment to stem the tide of the national opioid crisis.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and anonymous means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

For anyone wishing to locate one of the special collection locations being set up across WellSpan communities where residents may drop off unused medications this Saturday, an official collection site list – searchable by ZIP code – is available at takebackday.dea.gov.

For more information about best practices for securing and disposing of medicines, and other resources regarding opioids, visit WellSpan.org/Opioids.
