Three WellSpan hospitals are being honored for their commitments to patient safety by The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP). WellSpan York Hospital, WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital have been honored as part of the inaugural class of HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition program.
“Being recognized by HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety program demonstrates our team’s commitment to providing the highest quality care while keeping our patients safe,” said Michael B. Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer at WellSpan Health. “At WellSpan Health, patient Safety is our top priority. This recognition has special significance as our team members respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are honored to be named among the top hospitals in the state when it comes to patient safety.”
HAP launched the Excellence in Patient Safety program in 2018, as a way to recognize the state’s top performing hospitals, which have demonstrated low rates of health care-associated infections.
The program uses data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network. It identifies hospitals that perform better than the mean standardized infection ratio across Pennsylvania in three key measures: central line-associated bloodstream infection, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and clostridium difficile infections.
The recognition is open to all Pennsylvania hospitals.WellSpan was among 21 hospitals being recognized this year.
“At the Pennsylvania hospital community’s core lies a drive to continuously improve upon the excellent and safe care they provide—something we have seen on full display during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Andy Carter, HAP president and CEO. “We are so proud to honor the recipients of the 2020 HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition for achieving this well-deserved recognition.”
Four WellSpan hospitals recently earned A safety grades from Leapfrog, and in 2019, WellSpan Health earned the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety & Quality Award from The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum.
