Registration available for Peyton Walker Foundation student heart screening clinic in York County

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Appointments are available for a free heart screening clinic in York County, and parents are encouraged to act fast to register their children.

Space is limited for the clinic, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Apple Hill Medical Center, Entrance A, 25 Monument Road, York.

The Peyton Walker Foundation is holding the screening event in partnership with the Office of Pennsylvania State Rep. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township), Penn State Children’s Hospital, and WellSpan Health. Penn State Children’s Hospital physicians, with support from WellSpan Health medical staff, will conduct the heart screenings.

The free heart screenings will be available for students 12 to 19 years of age, who are not currently under the care of a cardiologist. The students will receive a check of their vital signs and an electrocardiogram screening (EKG). For those whose results indicate the need for additional testing, echocardiograms will also be provided, free of charge.

The Peyton Walker Foundation is named for the 2012 graduate of Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pa., who died from sudden cardiac arrest in 2013.

“Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in teens. It is imperative to have kids screened,” said Julie Walker, foundation director, The Peyton Walker Foundation. “Students do not receive an electrocardiogram screening, or EKG, as part of their routine physicals – and without an EKG, many heart issues can go undiagnosed. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes – it is time well spent.”

Every family that participates in the screening event will meet with a health care professional to discuss the results of their child's testing. They will receive a copy of their EKG report and an emailed summary of their visit. In addition, students will learn how to perform CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

The Peyton Walker Foundation has screened nearly 1,000 students to date and has identified significant heart conditions at each of its previous screening events. For more information and to register, visit www.peytonwalker.org/heartscreenings.
