Ever since she was little, Lisa
Long wanted to be a nurse. Growing up, at her mother and father’s corner
grocery store in Lebanon, she got to know her neighbors and discovered she
liked helping people.
As a registered nurse in the
cardiac catheterization lab at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, Lisa is still
helping her neighbors in Lebanon County.
One example of Lisa’s
dedication involves a geriatric patient who was scheduled for a cardiovascular
procedure. Lisa was unable to reach the patient, so she chose to call the
patient’s daughter. Lisa reached her as she was driving to her mother’s home.
Lisa remained on the phone as the daughter entered the house to find that her
mother had fallen and lost consciousness.
Lisa stayed on the line with
the daughter until EMS arrived and followed up with the daughter later that
evening to see how her mother was doing.
“Making calls is something I do
every day,” Lisa says. “But I think there was a reason I made that call when I
did.”
“Lisa does
an outstanding job of creating a meaningful and personal connection with our
patients before their procedures,” says Rachel Kohr, Lisa’s manager. “She
ensures that their questions are answered, anxieties are lessened, needs are
met, and that all of this is well communicated to our team.”
Lisa has been a nurse with
WellSpan for more than 20 years.
“It’s so very rewarding and
fulfilling,” she says. “I’ve been in Lebanon County my whole career. I’ve taken
care of my neighbors and friends of my mom and dad. I took care of one of my
favorite teachers, who actually had written my recommendation to get into
nursing school!”
“I’m proud to say I work here at WellSpan,” she
continues. “WellSpan really cares about the community that I care about. I work
with such a great team of fellow nurses, doctors, technicians and more… all
such caring people, and I want to acknowledge them all.”
