Hundreds of York County students screened for underlying heart conditions at Peyton Walker Foundation clinic

Monday, February 12, 2018

More than 200 York County students were screened for underlying heart conditions during a free Peyton Walker Foundation heart screening clinic Saturday.

Families gathered at the Apple Hill Medical Center in York Township for the six-hour event that offered free heart screenings for students 12 to 19 years of age, who are not currently under the care of a cardiologist. The students received a check of their vital signs and an electrocardiogram screening (EKG). For those whose results indicated the need for additional testing, echocardiograms were also provided, free of charge.

At the event, nearly a dozen students were advised to undergo additional testing. For a handful, there were significant findings.

The Peyton Walker Foundation has now screened nearly 1,200 students to date and has identified significant heart conditions at each of its screening events. The foundation is named for the 2012 graduate of Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pa., who died from sudden cardiac arrest in 2013.

“This is our way of carrying Peyton’s legacy forward,” said Julie Walker, foundation director, The Peyton Walker Foundation. “These screenings offer families valuable information to help identify potential heart issues that unfortunately impact too many students. It’s a mission we know Peyton would be proud of.”

Every family that participated in the screening event met with a health care professional to discuss the results of their child's testing. They received a copy of their EKG report and an emailed summary of their visit. In addition, students learned how to perform CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

The Peyton Walker Foundation held the screening event in partnership with the Office of Pennsylvania State Rep. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township), Penn State Children’s Hospital, and WellSpan Health. Penn State Children’s Hospital physicians, with support from WellSpan Health medical staff, conducted the heart screenings.
