Healthy Day in the Park to be held in Ephrata

Wednesday, May 09, 2018

A pet parade, book sale, healthy snacks, games and a health fair all will be part of Healthy Day in the Park, an event being sponsored in June by WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and the Ephrata Public Library.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 2, in Grater Memorial Park in Ephrata.

Healthy Day in the Park unites WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital’s tradition of fostering healthy communities with the Ephrata Public Library’s mission of promoting opportunities for those seeking to improve, change, enrich and enjoy their lives.

The event will kick off the 2018 GO (Get Outdoors) Ephrata! program, which promotes reading and physical activity for kids during the summer. Other activities at the Healthy Day in the Park will include a health fair, an obstacle course, games and free healthy snacks, including popcorn and make-your-own trail mix.

Kids also can go on a scavenger hunt, with top prizes of a bicycle and a scooter.

New this year will be a pet parade around the park and an emergency services area, where people can learn about the Ephrata community’s first responders.

Healthy Day in the Park also will feature a book sale, back by popular demand, with all proceeds benefiting the library. In conjunction with this, the event will feature Book Bingo, where winners get to pick a book as their prize.

“Healthy Day in the Park is a fun community event that has something for everyone. With our friends at the library we really try to promote activity and wellness. The library is always a great partner to work with. Their staff is so creative and full of energy!” said Steve Batchelor, regional director of community health and wellness for WellSpan.

Each year, the GO Ephrata! program encourages children and parents to get outdoors and be physically active by engaging in letterboxing, a hobby in which participants follow written clues to locate hidden items. GO Ephrata! has been a joint effort between the Ephrata Public Library and WellSpan Health since 2015.

The theme of this year’s GO Ephrata! program is Get Outdoors and Make Music.

“WellSpan’s support of the GO Ephrata! program has impacted members of our community, young and old. I regularly hear stories from families who found themselves spending quality time together outdoors in local parks. It is a testament to the value WellSpan Health places on overall community health and wellness,” said Penny Talbert, executive director of the Ephrata Public Library.
