'Get Outdoors' summer reading program returns to Adams County

For the third consecutive year, children and families across Adams County are encouraged to “Get Outdoors (GO)” through the GO Adams! initiative.

GO! Adams is an annual partnership between WellSpan Health and Adams County Library. Promoting reading and physical activity for children during the summer, the GO York! initiative officially kicks off June 1 and will run through Sunday, Aug. 11.

“The partnership with Adams County Library continues to enhance the opportunities for families to participate in physical activity and reading,” said Sandy Gladfelter, WellSpan Health Educator, Community Health and Wellness. “As this program continues to grow, the number of children and adults out exploring the state and local parks throughout the county is expanding. Connecting the physical aspect of the hikes with corresponding books in the libraries brings the program full circle – exercising the body and mind. It is a very unique and special program offering local residents a fun, safe, family activity.”

Each year the free program encourages children and parents to get outdoors and be physically active by engaging in an adaptation of letterboxing, a hobby in which participants must follow written clues to locate hidden items. This year, the program focuses on launch pads with the theme, “GO and Explore the Universe!”

Through the GO Adams! program, 15 wooden posts with an attached etched rubbing plate are hidden in various parks and along trails in Adams County. Participants use a crayon or colored pencil to rub the picture on the etched plate onto the corresponding page within their activity book.

Kids who turn in their etching sheets with at least three completed etchings will receive a prize. Additional grand prizes will be awarded, based on the number of etched rubbings completed.

Last year, Adams County Libraries distributed 1,680 GO and Make Music! Musical Scorerubbing sheets.

The GO program in Adams, York, Lancaster and Lebanon counties is funded through WellSpanHealth’s Community Partnership Grant Program. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that improve the health of the communities and people WellSpan serves.
