The physical and emotional benefits of massage for cancer patients are extensive, including improved relaxation, sleep and circulation and decreased pain, anxiety and nausea. Thanks to the generosity of the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County and members of its ENCORE Breast Cancer Support Group cancer patients at the WellSpan Adams Cancer Center can take advantage of the benefits of massage, free of charge.

The YWCA ENCORE Group is open to breast cancer survivors, as well as those currently living with cancer and their caregivers. With an emphasis on the importance of exercise in recovery, the group hosts programming that also includes discussion of health issues, treatments and nutrition. Participants do not have to be members of the YWCA.

Through various community fundraising efforts, the YWCA and the ENCORE Group provided $5,000 to the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation toward the cost of massages at the WellSpan Adams Cancer Center. Patients, with a WellSpan doctor’s order, can receive a massage by a specially trained massage therapist of the WellSpan Center for Mind/Body Health.

“The special oncology massage has been a wonderful addition to the services available to our patients,” said Stacey Gorman, director of WellSpan Adams Cancer Center. “The massages are designed to the specific needs of each individual patient and are intended to support the physical and emotional toll of the symptoms of cancer and the side effects of treatment.”
