Designation highlights health system’s commitment to using information technology to enhance patient care
WellSpan Health has been named one of "Health Care's Most Wired" by Hospitals and Health Networks (H&HN) magazine, highlighting WellSpan’s commitment to enhancing patient care through the effective use of information technology.
Hospitals & Health Networks’ 18th Annual Health Care’s Most Wired® list names select hospitals and health systems based on its Most Wired Survey, which is viewed as a benchmarking study and a leading industry barometer measuring information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals nationwide. Results were released by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum earlier this month.
WellSpan joins nearly 20 hospitals and health systems in Pennsylvania listed as 2016 winners. The results were announced as WellSpan continues its journey to consolidate its various electronic health record (EHR) systems to one consistent platform for the entire health system – an effort referred to as Project One.
Through Project One, WellSpan will transform the way it cares for patients with the goal of delivering a better patient experience and improved health outcomes. From appointment scheduling to registration, from outpatient office visits to inpatient hospital care, from an office in Lancaster or Lebanon counties to a facility in Adams or York counties – Project One will enable WellSpan to deliver seamless coordination of care through one patient record across the entire system.
“As we increasingly find our attentions focused on our work in Project One, it is important to reflect on the extremely strong foundation and legacy that effort is built upon,” said R. Hal Baker, MD, senior vice president for clinical improvement and chief information officer, WellSpan Health. “Our Most Wired award reaffirms the tremendous work our information services and technology teams do every day, helping our entire organization work as one in the care of our patients.”
The Most Wired Survey methodology sets specific requirements in each of four focus areas. If any of these requirements are not met, the organization does not achieve the Most Wired designation. Thus, an organization could have many advanced capabilities, yet still not achieve Most Wired status.
The four focus areas are:
- business and administrative management;
- clinical quality and safety (inpatient/outpatient hospital); and
- clinical integration (ambulatory/physician/patient/community).
Among Most Wired hospitals:
- 53 percent interface electronic health record data with population health tools;
- 62 percent stratify patients according to risk;
- 51 percent aggregate data from patient encounters to create a community health record;
- 68 percent accept patient-generated data through the patient portal;
- 26 percent of Most Wired organizations offer E-visits through a mobile application; and
- 61 percent use social media to provide support groups.

About Health Care’s Most Wired®
Health Care’s Most Wired® survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, 2016, is published annually by Hospitals and Health Networks (H&HN). The 2016 Most Wired® survey and benchmarking study is a leading industry barometer measuring information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals nationwide. The survey of 680 participants, representing an estimated 2,146 hospitals—more than 34 percent of all hospitals in the U.S.—examines how organizations are leveraging IT to improve performance for value-based health care in the areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management; quality and safety; and clinical integration. Detailed results of the survey and study can be found in the July issue of H&HN. For a full list of winners, visit www.hhnmag.com.
