Heart healthy tipsLaura White, clinical dietitian with WellSpan Heart & Vascular, offers these heart healthy tips:

  • Cut back on sodium, and make healthier carbohydrate choices
  • Use as little salt in cooking as possible. You can cut at least half the salt from most recipes.
  • Avoid using pre-packaged seasoning mixes because they often contain a lot of salt.
  • Choose low-sodium or no-salt-added canned items for lower sodium content.
  • Season foods with herbs, spices, garlic, onions, peppers and lemon or lime juice to add flavor without adding salt.
  • Use whole gains such as whole wheat pasta, quinoa, barley and brown rice. Try using flours made from whole grains in recipes.
  • Reduce the amount of sugar in recipes.
  • When making soups, add dried beans or lentils.
  • For dessert, eat fresh fruit.
