Fleas, Mites, and Chiggers

Fleas, mites, and chiggers often bite humans, but are not serious. It may be difficult to determine which type of insect caused the bite, or if it was caused bu something else.

What are the symptoms of a flea, mites, or chigger bite?

Each person may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • Small, raised skin bumps

  • Pain or itching

  • Allergic reactions with swelling or blistering

Call your health care provider if the symptoms don't go away or if you have any concerns or questions.

Treatment for bites

Treatment may include:

  • Cleaning the area well with soap and water.

  • Using an antihistamine, if needed, for itching (pill or cream)

  • Using other creams for swelling or pain.

  • Taking acetaminophen, if needed, for discomfort.

When should I call my health care provider?

Call your health care provider if you have any of the following:

  • Lasting pain or itching

  • Signs of infection at the site of the bit  such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage

  • Fever

Call 911 or your local emergency medical service (EMS) if there are signs of a severe allergic reaction. the signs are trouble breathing, tightness in the throat or chest, feeling faint, dizziness, hives (raised, red, itchy bumps_ over a large part of the body, and/or nausea and vomiting.
