Log Roll Method for Safe Movement

Topic Overview

If you've had surgery on your back or belly, an injury to your trunk, or pain in your back, then you know that bending and twisting can cause more pain or injury. Movements that would normally be easy and automatic may be hard or unsafe until you are healed or have less pain.

To get in and out of bed safely, you can use the log roll method. Sitting on the side of the bed, use your arms to lower yourself onto your side. The idea is to keep your trunk straight as you lower your upper body and raise your legs.

Things to remember

  • Make sure your movements are slow and steady.
  • Keep your trunk straight. It might help to imagine it is a plank of wood that can't bend or twist in any direction.
  • Have an extra pillow within reach. Use it for support if you need it.
  • Follow the instructions you get from your doctor or physical therapist. You may get different instructions that are based on your needs.

If you're having trouble

  • Get in and out of bed from the opposite side.
  • Sleep with your head at what is usually the foot of your bed.
  • After you are in a sitting position, pause for a few moments before you stand up. This may help keep you from getting dizzy.
