When someone is going through an experience with cancer – whether the diagnosis is for themselves, a loved one, or someone in their community – connecting with others who have had similar experiences gives a feeling of support, of caring, and of hope. Art can be a means for creating these connections; a creative expression of the complex emotions tied to a cancer experience that can be shared with others.
WellSpan Health wants to support our cancer community by giving a space to share artwork, and are creating a virtual gallery space in the new WellSpan York Cancer Center. We are looking for works from our community to go into the virtual gallery.
The Project: Using advanced technology including augmented reality, we are planning an interactive virtual art gallery that will showcase patient- and community-created artwork. Viewers will use a mobile device and a special frame in the new Cancer Center to view virtual representations of actual artwork. We hope that the interactive artwork gives our cancer community a connection point for their shared experiences and also provides a positive moment during a challenging experience.
Artwork: We’re looking for original artwork created by patients, loved ones, staff members or other members of our community that is in some way tied to a cancer experience or would provide feelings of support to our cancer community. This artwork could be paintings, photography, photos of physical artwork like sculpture or crafts – really anything we can take a picture of! For example, if a patient processed their emotions about their diagnosis through a painting, or a loved one took a special photo they feel is uplifting or supportive for our patients, etc.
You do not have to be a professional artist to participate, just send us artwork that you feel best shows support to cancer patients.
