Career Exploration & Development Opportunities

WellSpan offers a variety of observation and hands-on career development opportunities for those who are seriously interested in learning more about a career in health care:

  • Shadowing

Shadowing offers individuals the opportunity to spend several hours learning about a particular career by meeting employees who are working in that area. A typical shadowing experience lasts between two and four hours. Additional information about the program can be found in the links below.

  • Unpaid Internships

WellSpan Health provides unpaid internship opportunities to enhance student learning in health care occupations. Internships at WellSpan are only offered to post-secondary students in partnership with specific accredited colleges, universities or allied health schools and are part of a student’s curriculum/graduation requirements (earned credit hours).

  • Nursing Externships

WellSpan Health offers paid externships for nursing students during the summer before their final semester/year of school. Apply for externship opportunities at WellSpan hospitals.

  • Medical Laboratory Science Externships

WellSpan offers a paid summer externship at York Hospital to introduce students to the field of medical laboratory science. This is a competitive program and students must apply and be selected to participate. Applicants must be enrolled in a baccalaureate program at a college/university. Those majoring in Medical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology) are preferred. However, students in a laboratory-related field may also apply.

Applications for the summer of 2020 will be accepted through Feb. 21. Click here for the application.

  • Medical Assistant Externships

WellSpan Health recognizes the ongoing demand for Medical Assistants in the physician office setting.  Therefore we offer externship opportunities for students in Medical Assistant programs.  The externship experience is not a focus on “teaching the student,” but rather approached as providing real life “work experience” for students.

WellSpan currently partners with the following schools to offer externships for their students:

    • Central Penn College
    • Consolidated School of Business
    • Fortis Institute
    • Frederick Community College
    • Harrisburg Area Community College
    • Kaplan Career Institute of Harrisburg
    • Keystone Technical Institute
    • Lancaster County Career and Technology Center
    • Tesst College of Technology in Towson
    • York County School of Technology
    • Yorktowne Business Institute
    • YTI Career Institute

To apply for a Medical Assistant externship at WellSpan, please contact your school advisor or coordinator.  The advisor or coordinator will then submit the request to WellSpan at least 60 days prior to the start of the externship.  WellSpan will review the request and will contact the student for an interview if there is space available.  Submission of a request does not guarantee the student an externship.  To be considered for an externship, students must attend an accredited on ground (online students do not qualify for these externships) program.
