How do I know if I’m at risk?

If you have had contact with someone known to have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) and you are exhibiting respiratory symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider.

Any needed testing would be determined by our care teams.

How can I protect myself and others?

The best prevention for COVID-19, the flu and colds, is to practice proper handwashing and respiratory etiquette along with social distancing. Help stop the spread of viruses by:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones and other frequently touched items.
  • Stay home and avoid close contact with others outside your home.
  • If you do go in public in places where social distancing may be difficult (ex. grocery store), wear a face covering such as a mask or other cloth covering. WellSpan is asking anyone coming to our hospitals or medical offices to wear a face covering.
  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others.
  • For your convenience and to protect others you may contact outside your home, consider a WellSpan Online Urgent Care appointment.  (Use coupon code COVID19 for a free visit.)

Will wearing a mask protect me from the coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (Pa. DOH), WellSpan requests that patients and visitors wear a protective face covering when visiting any WellSpan facility.

Hand-made fabric masks and other face coverings can help slow the spread of COVID-19. By covering your face, you help to stop spreading disease to others. Remember this saying: "My mask protects you, your mask protects me."

The Pa. Department of Health recommends that you wear face coverings when:

  • Visiting your health care provider
  • Shopping at essential businesses, like grocery stores or pharmacies
  • Interacting with customers/clients at essential businesses
  • Using public transportation
  • Feeling sick, coughing or sneezing

For more information on wearing face coverings or masks, please visit these web sites:

How is WellSpan caring for patients who may need evaluation and treatment for COVID-19?

WellSpan Medical Group practices provide evaluation and care for patients who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath, please call your primary care provider who will determine the need for testing or care.

WellSpan Medical Group practices that recently served as dedicated COVID-19 evaluation and treatment sites have returned to providing patients with their intended care services.

If you do not have a primary care provider please use WellSpan’s online screening tool  at www.WellSpan.org/Coronavirus to determine if you may be at risk for COVID-19. Also, patients are encouraged to use WellSpan Online Urgent Care to be seen quickly and safely, without the need to travel to a care location. Patients should visit www.WellSpan.org/OUC to get started.

Finally, a Coronavirus Information Hotline has been established for patients that may have questions. Call toll-free at (855) 851-3641. The line is open daily from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

We have also limited visitation at our hospitals and outpatient locations, with certain clinical exceptions. The full details can be found here.

We have also placed signs at all of our practices asking patients to call the office or their doctor before coming inside if they may be experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19, or if they have come in contact with someone that has tested positive. We have introduced similar messages into our online scheduling and appointment reminders. In addition, we have placed an alert and information on our website.

Are programs and events still occurring on schedule?

For your health and the health of our staff and others in the community, WellSpan is carefully considering each program and event taking place in the coming weeks. We are following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Pa. Department of Health recommendations in limiting social interactions of large groups. Cancellations or changes to events and programs will be listed on this website as they are determined. Please contact the practice or refer to this website for any questions about upcoming events.

WellSpan is also sharing its decision tree on deciding which events and programs to cancel due to COVID-19.

Retired Clinicians Needed

While we have suspended traditional volunteer work during this time, there may be a need for retired clinicians to volunteer to help support COVID-19 response.

If you are a retired clinician who is willing and able to volunteer during the COVID-19 response, please complete the clinician volunteer form and a member of our staff will reach out to you.

If you have questions, please call the Volunteer Engagement office at (717) 851-2147.

Stay informed.

I'm In Challenge

WellSpan, along with other health systems in the central Pennsylvania region, are joining together for the "I'm In Challenge." We encourage you to stay IN the fight against COVID-19 by practicing safe habits such as maintaining social distance, frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a mask or face covering in public.

You can participate in the social media challenge, too! Share a photo on social media that says "I'm In" and use #ImIn and #WellSpan. Share in your post why you're in: whether you're in for your family, to flatten the curve for healthcare workers, or to get back to your favorite activities safely.
