Coronavirus -Web -Banner -1000x 300

The outbreak of the respiratory disease known as coronavirus (COVID-19), which originated in China, has now been detected in dozens of countries worldwide, including the United States. WellSpan Health is continuously preparing for the spread of coronavirus, in coordination with the Pa. Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Our teams are meeting daily to update our plans and procedures to ensure the health and safety of our patients, visitors and staff.

How do I know if I’m at risk?

If you have had contact with someone known to have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) and you are exhibiting respiratory symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider.

Additionally, if you have been to impacted countries listed in the CDC travel advisories or areas of ongoing spread, and you are experiencing respiratory symptoms, we recommend you contact your healthcare provider before going to the doctor’s office or hospital.

Any needed testing would be determined by our care teams.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other respiratory illnesses, such as the common cold and flu. The most common of these symptoms include:

  • Fever and cough
  • Fever and shortness of breath

According to the CDC, symptoms can range from mild to severe, and even life-threatening.

What if I have questions?

If you have a question related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and you don’t have a primary care doctor, WellSpan Health has set up a Coronavirus Information Hotline toll-free at (855) 851-3641. If you are concerned you or your loved one may have contracted coronavirus (COVID-19), you can call this phone line with questions daily from 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. This line is meant to provide general information about the coronavirus related to prevention, risk, screening and instructions on when to seek care.

How can I protect myself and others?

The best prevention for COVID-19, the flu and colds, is to practice proper handwashing and respiratory etiquette. Help stop the spread of viruses by:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones and other frequently touched items.
  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others.
  • For your convenience and to protect others you may contact outside your home, consider a WellSpan Online Urgent Care appointment.  (use coupon code COVID19 for a free visit)

Will wearing a mask protect me from the coronavirus (COVID-19)?

The World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC do not recommend healthy individuals wear a mask to avoid infection.  Please note that we are not able to provide masks to community members who may request them as our supplies are limited and reserved for our care providers, and for those patients in our care that are sick. Washing or disinfecting your hands before touching your face is one of the most important things you can do to prevent the spread.

What is WellSpan Health doing to prepare?

WellSpan is using dedicated care locations and testing collection sites (many open-air) for individuals that have been instructed to go by their physician. They are not meant for walk-up individuals. You can click here to learn more.

We have also limited visitation at our hospitals and outpatient locations, with certain clincial exceptions. The full details can be found here.

We have also placed signs at all of our practices asking patients to call the office or their doctor before coming inside if they may be experiencing symtoms related to COVID-19, or if they have come in contact with someone that has tested positive. We have introduced similar messages into our online scheduling and appointment reminders. In addition, we have placed an alert and information on our website.

Are programs and events still occurring on schedule?

For your health and the health of our staff and others in the community, WellSpan is carefully considering each program and event taking place in the coming weeks. We are following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Pa. Department of Health recommendations in limiting social interactions of large groups. Cancellations or changes to events and programs will be listed on this website as they are determined. Please contact the practice or refer to this website for any questions about upcoming events.

WellSpan is also sharing its decision tree on deciding which events and programs to cancel due to COVID-19.

Retired Clinicians Needed

While we have suspended traditional volunteer work during this time, there is a need for retired clinicians to volunteer to help support COVID-19 response.

If you are a retired clinician who is willing and able to volunteer during the COVID-19 response, please complete the clinician volunteer form and a member of our staff will reach out to you.

If you have questions, please call the Volunteer Engagement office at (717) 851-2147.
