Impacting the Health of Our Communities – Together

Healthy Communities secondary imageWellSpan works with other health care providers, community members, thought leaders, businesses and social service organizations to share ideas and focus on programs and services that will sustain and strengthen our communities. We share a common belief that good health is not simply the absence of illness and disease, but a balanced state of physical, mental and social well-being. We work together because we know this is a goal that cannot be achieved alone.

Through key partnerships, WellSpan continues to take big steps toward screening and supporting patients with social determinants of health barriers. Social determinants of health are the conditions in the environment where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship and age that impact their health, functioning and quality of life. Improving these conditions can even have a bigger impact on health than the medical care they receive. In 2022, about 360,000 patients were screened for food, housing and/or transportation insecurity. Our care management team takes swift action to meet any urgent needs with charity care funds, while connecting eligible patients to social services and enrolling them in special programs across the community and within WellSpan.

Success Story

Roberta, a Spanish-speaking, 45-year-old mother of four, thought that mammograms were expensive and much too difficult to schedule around her busy life and job as a fruit packer. That all changed when her medical provider shared that she could get a mammogram at no out-of-pocket cost to her, through a program supported by WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and the Adams County Breast Cancer Coalition. Roberta was able to schedule and get her very first mammogram late one summer afternoon when WellSpan's mobile mammography motor coach stopped by a nearby apple-growing co-op. The results were clear.

"It was perfect because I can’t go to an appointment in the morning. It was a good experience."
