Reaching Out, Making Health Happen Together

WellSpan Health remains steadfast in our mission of Working as One to improve health through exceptional care for all, lifelong wellness and healthy communities.

The community component of this mission remains top of mind as we work as one to deliver convenient and easily accessible services in our traditional health care settings as well as out into our communities when and where our care is needed and wanted. With the help and collaboration of our community partners, the achievements made in fiscal year 2022 truly embody the spirit of Reaching Out, Making Health Happen Together. Creating healthy communities expands beyond simply offering health care; it requires actively listening to community members to better understand, identify and remove barriers to care, providing the tools and resources to encourage healthy lifestyles and connecting individuals to needed services and social support. WellSpan cannot do this work alone. We continually engage with other organizations who share our mission to identify and create opportunities to expand our reach, help more people and collectively improve the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.

The successes highlighted below represent a small fraction of the brightest achievements shared in our 2022 Community Benefit Report.

  • The Mobile Mammography Coach, our state-of-the-art breast imaging service made possible through our collaborative partnership with Capital Blue Cross, crisscrossed our service area providing private and discreet onsite screenings at 70 community events at no cost for all uninsured patients. Of the 595 patients screened, six individuals were diagnosed with cancer that might otherwise have escaped detection. Additionally, our Mobile Mammography program has successfully built partnerships with several community-based organizations that have significantly contributed to our ability to reach our diverse and underserved patients.
  • Implementing solutions to language barriers that create obstacles to health care services was addressed by expanding access to our language services through the launch of My Interpretation Assistant (MIA). Measurable improvements in language access and medical interpretation were noted at various WellSpan urgent care, hospital and family practice settings. Additionally, an increased provision of non-English health education to Hispanic and other communities was made available through these settings.
  • Identifying barriers related to access were also prioritized over the last year. WellSpan, in partnership with organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) York chapter, created the opportunity to learn about these barriers directly from the members of our community by hosting a series of listening sessions on colorectal and breast cancer screenings. These informative and engaging sessions allowed WellSpan and our partners to hear about real challenges, better identify barriers and find more effective ways to reach out to all.
  • WellSpan is an honored community partner with health coalitions – Healthy Adams County, Healthy Franklin County, Community Health Council of Lebanon County and Healthy York Coalition. These coalitions play an important role in WellSpan's Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) process. This year, WellSpan collaborated with our coalitions and other partners to complete the 2022 CHNA. This data was used to design WellSpan's 2023-2025 Community Health Improvement Plan . Through our collaboration with the coalitions and others, we identified core themes and areas for improvement including health equity, social determinants of health and lifelong wellness. Each county coalition hosted its own public Health Forum event, to review the identified needs and strategic priority areas for the coming years and engage new partners and volunteers to help advance the healthcare agenda for our communities.

We invite you to learn more about our efforts and achievements through the stories included in our 2022 Community Benefit Report that illustrate the inspiring outcomes of our year of Reaching Out, Making Health Happen Together.
