Keeping our Community a Healthy Step Ahead
WellSpan Health is more than a health care provider to the south central Pennsylvania communities we serve. We take time to understand each community’s health care needs and engage with our community partners to identify the best way to meet those needs. This digital 2020 WellSpan Community Benefit Report looks at some of the ways WellSpan Health has worked with its partners throughout south central Pennsylvania to address food and housing insecurity, contribute to public safety, improve our communities and provide care for all. Through our partnerships and leadership, WellSpan Health is supporting dozens of community organizations in their tireless efforts to make south central Pennsylvania a healthier place to live. Mental Health First Aid
|
Offered 64 MHFA training sessions and equipped 1,091 community members with skills needed to recognize and respond to signs of mental illness and those in crisis.

Question, Persuade and Refer. (QPR)
|
Trained 828 community members on the warning signs of suicidal crisis as well as how to respond and seek help.
|
Mental Health Awareness Classes
|
Trained 1,500 individuals in mental health issues including warning signs, intervention resources, and wellness practices. This includes farmers, state agencies, and those working to support COVID mitigation efforts.

Parent Training for Family-based Services
|
Reached 50 parents across the region with workshops to help create a healthy relationship with their children and deal with challenging behavior in a positive way.

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention
|
Provided trainings for over 2,100 WellSpan health workers and community members on crisis intervention.
|
Suicide Prevention Campaign
|
Engaged 120 people in community film event and book discussion on topics of depression, suicide and resiliency.
|
Opioid and Prescription Drug Use

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
|
Initiated 520 patients into the program, which combines the use of medications and recovery support to treat people with substance use disorders.

South Central PA Opioid Awareness Coalition
|
Expanded into Southeast PA through the collaboration of health systems and health care professional organizations focused on addressing opioid prescribing, addiction and the heroin crisis.

York Opioid Collaborative
|
Actively supported by helping to solicit funds and participation in the Public Health, Safety and Data Teams.

Project Lazarus
|
Continued to support Lancaster County's overdose prevention program.

National Night Out
|
Engaged 266 individuals during events in Chambersburg and Waynesboro.

|
Maintained participation and leadership in each of the region’s efforts to address food availability and insecurity.

Market Basket of the Month
|
Provided healthy eating educational materials to community partners, worksites, schools, and markets.

Market Bucks
|
Provided fruit and vegetable vouchers to 310 WellSpan patients with food insecurity challenges, which contributed $31,620 to local farmers and growers.

WellSpan at Mondays Market
|
Partnered to provide a convenient location for those using Farmers Market Nutrition Program and WIC vouchers, reaching more than 500 community members while also promoting themed weeks such as Latino Day, Community Day and Senior Day.

Community Garden Workshop

Provided an educational event for more than 60 participants.

Provided health professions students with practical learning opportunities by working with community members with a strength training program.

Worked with community parters to initiate a weekly walk for seniors at the Lebanon Valley Mall.

Safe Kids Adams County- Car Seat Safety
|
Provided 72 car seats for at-risk community members as part of the Safe Kids Injury Prevention program in Adams County.

|
Engaged 7,200 individuals in losing nearly 14,000 pounds.

Engaged 38 community members in an eight-week educational series on healthy living.

Get Fit Now
|
Promoted healthy lifestyle changes to 108 participants through supportive group sessions, the use of FitBit technology and strategies to help participants improve their health.

Get Outdoors (GO) Program
|
Handed out more than 15,000 activity sheets and expanded the program into all five counties WellSpan serves. More than 5,000 participants actively engaged in the outdoor physical activity program that aligns with the libraries' Summer Reading initiatives.

Women's Wellness Day
|
Promoted importance of physical activity and nutrition to 126 individuals for this first annual event in partnership with Shippensburg University.

Recipe for a Healthy Heart--(new--initiative titled Heart Month Campaign)
|
Provided nutrition, weight and healthy heart messages to 45 Franklin County community members.

Waynesboro Hospital Health Fair
|
Gathered community organizations that shared information on various health topics and provided 10 health screenings to 1,700 participants.

Tobacco Programming
|
Educated more than 1,100 individuals on tobacco use prevention and cessation.
|
Virtual School Nurse In-Service
|
Trained 57 school health professionals on multiple topics with an emphasis on behavioral health and coping skills.
