2012 Community Needs Assessment

Care -initiativesChronicEvery three years, the Center for Opinion Research at Franklin & Marshall College performs a comprehensive community health assessment on behalf of Healthy York County Coalition, Healthy Adams County Coalition  and key community partners. This three-part study includes a telephone survey of hundreds of community residents to identify their current health status and behaviors that may impact their health. Additionally, the coalitions analyze regional health-related data and conduct in-person interviews with community residents and key stakeholders.

The most recent survey occured in 2012. Here are a few of the notable observations and findings detailed in the 2012 Community Health Assessment

  • Our region is growing and getting older.
  • Area residents are spending more time commuting to work compared to 10 years ago.
  • Poverty rates are rising in Adams and York counties. The rates are most pronounced in York City where 37 percent of residents live in poverty;
  • Adams and York counties have significant numbers of overweight or obese individuals combined with a high majority of people who have low rates of regular exercise.
  • Only three to four percent of area residents are eat three servings of vegetables a day.
  • One in five residents has been diagnosed with a depressive or anxiety disorder.
  • Health disparities data show that poverty and age are significantly associated with differential outcomes related to access, health conditions and prevention behaviors.
