The WellSpan Charity Golf Tournament has benefitted many programs in our communities. We thank you for partnering with WellSpan York Hospital to provide these important programs and services for our community.
Did you know that one in four girls and one in six boys in the U.S. will be sexually abused by the age of 18? In York County, more than 400 exams are performed each year on children who are alleged victims of child sexual abuse. WellSpan York Hospital is the primary hospital in York County with a team of forensic nurses who care for pediatric victims of sexual assault.
When the unthinkable happens, children are physically hurt and emotionally distraught. The care they receive from the Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) provider can make a difference in how they recover and cope with their assault.
WellSpan’s team of Forensic nurses are specially trained professionals who understand the delicate nature of performing pediatric sexual assault and abuse examinations. They examine their young patients at WellSpan York Hospital or in the privacy of the York County Children’s Advocacy Center. They know what to say and how to say it. They help alleviate fears and build trust. They give children a safe place to begin emotional and physical recovery.
SAFE nurses also provide education to caregivers of sexually abused children and make recommendations or referrals to mental health services and caregiver support groups. They are an extraordinary team of healthcare providers who offer an invaluable service to the youngest and most vulnerable victims of abuse.
