WellSpan has expanded the availability of advanced cardiac care to the residents of Adams County, beginning with the introduction of catheterization services at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital in 2001.
Today, the center also offers invasive procedures, such as pacemaker and defibrillator implants, as well as access to a full-time cardiologist, who is based at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. In December 2011, physicians and staff at the hospital began performing transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), an outpatient procedure which serves as an excellent tool for visually evaluating blood clots and heart valve function . Other locally available services include stress testing, EKGs, stress echocardiography, nuclear stress testing and synchronized cardioversion.
These enhanced efforts in Gettysburg, which demonstrate WellSpan's full spectrum of cardiac care, are supported by services including nutrition management, preventive cardiac care and cardiac rehabilitation.
In 2011, WellSpan Rehabilitation acquired Go Sport Physical Therapy to expand its outpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation services. The addition means patients needing physical therapy services benefit from a more coordinated and comprehensive rehabilitation experience.
Area physicians benefit by being able to offer their patients access to coordinated rehabilitation care, ranging from inpatient rehabilitation at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital to outpatient sports medicine, occupational and speech therapy in five convenient locations throughout Adams County.
The 2008 opening of the WellSpan Adams Cancer Center was a major step in WellSpan's plan to offer the people of Adams County local access to advanced cancer care. Services available at the center include radiology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, a nurse navigator, nutritional counseling, financial assistance, educational material and psychosocial support. Should cancer patients require care at multiple WellSpan facilities, it can be accomplished effortlessly.
The state-of-the-art equipment at the WellSpan Adams Cancer Center matches that which is available in York County. Cancer treatment protocols and procedures also are consistent across the health system, where providers share important information about cancer patients through weekly video conferences.
In 2009, WellSpan assumed full ownership and management of the outpatient surgical center in Gettysburg. It had previously been a three-way partnership that also included a local physician group and a management firm. This has allowed WellSpan to expand the availability of outpatient surgery services and to coordinate the delivery of care and insurance coverage with other services patients require across the continuum.
Since 2001, WellSpan has established in Adams County specialty services such as oncology, orthopedics, general surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, rheumatology, endocrinology and behavioral health. Residents no longer have to leave the area for this type of care which is coordinated and convenient.
In 2012, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital completed an $18.1 million expansion of its Emergency Department. It was the largest construction project on the hospital's campus in the past 20 years. The original Emergency Department was designed to treat 15,000 patients annually. That number of patients treated, however, had increased to 28,000 annually.
The expansion added 18 private patient rooms equipped with portable nursing computers, upgraded beds, lifts capable of hoisting 550 pounds, "smart pump" IV machines and flat screen televisions. The new facility includes a new triage area and two trauma resuscitation rooms. The expansion is expected to meet population growth for the next 10 years.
