The WellSpan Spotlight

Team members help pick surgical equipment for new York tower

WellSpan team members had a unique opportunity to provide feedback for an important aspect of WellSpan York Hospital’s Surgical and Critical Care Tower (SCCT) project: the selection of surgical booms and lights for the tower’s new operating rooms.

The process began in the fall of 2023, when five vendors set up full-scale demonstration displays, where team members had the chance to see, operate and evaluate the equipment. Additionally, some vendors showcased their planning and design tools, including 3D and virtual reality experiences that simulated the full scale, orientation and key features of the equipment within a virtual operating room. The event was essentially a mini-trade show, exclusively for WellSpan team members.

With the feedback from employees who attended the demonstration displays, three vendors were subsequently invited to participate in a competitive bidding process. As part of the bidding process, each vendor was required to organize a tour of a local health care facility outfitted with their equipment. The tours allowed select WellSpan clinicians another opportunity for hands-on equipment evaluation in a real-life setting.

Based on the results of the bidding process and accompanying demonstrations, WellSpan selected Skytron booms and lights for the SCCT. The equipment will be supplied and installed by Pennsylvania-based Target Surgical, Skytron’s distributor, service provider and design consultant in our area.

WellSpan’s SCCT project engineers will work hand-in-hand with Target Surgical and clinical leadership for the installation of the booms and lights in the new tower’s ORs, with a focus on staff and patient safety, ease of use, reliability and flexibility.

“One of the guiding principles of Apex, WellSpan York Hospital expansion’s project, is the prioritization of internal expertise,” said Alyssa Moyer, president of WellSpan York Hospital. “Thank you to everyone who participated and provided feedback for this substantial vendor selection process. Insights from team members continues to be invaluable as we plan, design and build the new surgical and critical care tower.”
