Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:
As a biology major in college, I had not thought about what career to take. Having had a pediatric kidney disease, I had an interest in medicine. After taking my MCATs and doing well, I applied to medical school and got in on an early acceptance. After spending time in medical school, my focus changed to rheumatology due to my mother's autoimmune disease. After a short time working in the field, I decided this was the direction to go. I love diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases in rheumatology.
What I want my patients to know about me:
I am very straightforward and will not hold back information. I like my patients to be well educated on their condition and will gladly spend time with them so that they are comfortable with what I feel is going on. Rheumatology is still a field that is considered the art of medicine. Tests are not typically the way to find an answer, a thorough history is. Therefore I do ask a lot of specific questions. My goal is the same as my patients. I want to get them feeling better and back to living a happy productive life doing the things that they like to do.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
I enjoy spending time at our family's cabin where there is no cell phone service. I enjoy almost any sport and will watch or play almost all of them. Going to my family's cabin, small weekend trips with friends and exercising are how I enjoy spending a majority of my time away from work. I also have quite an extensive LEGO collection.
