The Mother-Infant Center at WellSpan York Hospital

WellSpan York Hospital’s Mother-Infant Center combines the latest technology with caring providers and comfortable surroundings to create a beautiful birth experience for routine deliveries and complex situations. The Center features the area’s only Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit and perinatology services for high-risk pregnancies.

  • About Our Facility

WellSpan York Hospital has 12 labor and delivery rooms. Each is designed for your care during labor and birth. The rooms all have a private bathroom with a shower as well as a rocking chair and a sleep chair.  If you are scheduled to have a Cesarean birth, we have three Cesarean delivery rooms and a recovery room within the labor and delivery unit.

After delivery, you and your baby will move to our beautiful Mother-Infant Center, which features 43 spacious, bright and cheerfully decorated private rooms. Each room offers:

    • Roomy bathroom with shower and hairdryer
    • Refrigerator
    • Bedside controls for lights, television and telephone
    • Special areas for "primping" and display of cards and flowers
    • Comfortable, convertible sleep-sofa for dads
    • Data port with wireless access

At the Mother-Infant Center, your newborn's safety is a top priority. Your newborn will remain in your direct care and supervision in your room or with a nurse in the Newborn Nursery. Video cameras, monitored at the nurses' station, track all coming and going on the unit. Mother-Infant Center staff members all wear easily recognizable photo identification badges, and any new caregivers will be introduced to you by your nurse.

  • About Our Care Team

Our nurses, board-certified physicians and certified nurse midwives strive to make the coming of parenthood a beautiful experience. Each nurse in the labor and delivery unit has a variety of skills and experiences, including:

    • Childbirth education
    • Doula training
    • Massage therapy
    • Knowledge of many types of comfort measures and the ability to teach your family members how to comfort and support you
    • Education on high-risk pregnancies
  • When Special Care is Needed

There are times when delivering a baby isn't as simple as everyone would wish. For these circumstances, WellSpan York Hospital has the staff, expertise and technologies to address your needs and help you understand what is happening and why.

Should you require a Cesarean delivery or critical care during your delivery, you will not face the disruption of being moved to a different section of the hospital.  With three Cesarean delivery rooms, as well as a two-bed intensive care area equipped with the latest critical care technology, we will be able to provide you with the special care you need within the labor and delivery department.

Should your baby require extra attention, our neonatologists (physicians who specialize in newborn medicine) are available onsite 24-hours-a-day.  Located adjacent to the Labor and Delivery Department, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offers state-of-the-art care for premature and critically ill newborns. In fact, WellSpan York Hospital is the only health care facility in the area offering this highly specialized service.

  • Getting Off to a Healthy Start

After giving birth, you will stay in your labor and delivery room for approximately two hours. This is a wonderful time to initiate kangaroo care and breastfeeding.

Our nurses are expert teachers and will provide you with learning tools that will meet the needs of you and your family. These include:

    • Care of your newborn
    • Importance of immunizations
    • Hearing screening and early intervention opportunities
    • Safe sleep education
    • Shaken baby education
    • Crib and home safety
    • Car seat education and recall information

You will also have access to the Newborn TV Channel and the WellSpan York Hospital Education Channel, which are available 24-hours-a-day during your stay in the Mother-Infant Center.

Your baby will need to be examined by a physician within the first 24 hours of life. You should choose and become acquainted with a pediatrician or family physician during your pregnancy. If you are in need of a physician, call the WellSpan HealthSource at (717) 851-3500 or (800) 840-5905.

  • Feeding Needs

Our nurses are specialists in caring for you and your baby. They will help and support your choice of infant feeding.

Breastfeeding mothers also have access to our Breastfeeding Center, whose staff members are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). They are experts who can help you prevent, recognize and address your breastfeeding concerns. At least one consultant is available every day in the hospital to see patients and take your phone calls.

We welcome telephone calls at any time. Outpatient consultations are also available and pre-registration is required.  In order to allow us to reserve time for your visit, please call (717) 851-2953 in advance to arrange for a consultation.

The Lactation Center also offers high quality breastfeeding supplies and equipment at reasonable prices. Medela breast pumps, nursing pillows, a large selection of nursing bras and camisoles and breast care products are available for your purchase. Hospital-grade breast pumps are also available for rental. Gift certificates are a wonderful option for family and friends, and our consultants can guide you to make the best selections for your unique needs.

The WellSpan York Hospital Childbirth & Family Education Program offers a two-hour breastfeeding class for expectant parents. This is included in the prepared childbirth series or can be taken individually.

  • Postpartum Services

The birth of a child can be a joyous and exciting time, but following childbirth, some women may experience postpartum disorders that can adversely affect a woman's mental health. Most times, the "baby blues" last for only a few weeks and usually disappear on their own. However, if the symptoms don't lessen after a few weeks, or if they're so severe that they interfere with your ability to complete everyday tasks, you may have a more severe form of depression, called postpartum depression, that requires medical treatment.

WellSpan offers resources and support that can help move beyond the baby blues. Please contact our perinatal case manager by calling (717) 851-4305 or email

  • Support Groups
