Childbirth Preparation Classes

Though we do not list our class dates online, be assured that we will schedule you based on your due date and class availability. We advise you to register by the end of your fifth month as classes tend to fill quickly. Once you receive your class dates, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. 

  • Prepared Childbirth Series

    Stages of labor, comfort measures, anesthesia choices, labor interventions, postpartum adjustments, relaxation and breathing techniques, and Cesarean delivery will all be covered. This series includes:

    • Four-week childbirth education class
    • Baby Care Class
    • Breastfeeding Class
    • Tour of Mother-Infant Center

    Cost: $70 per couple

  • Condensed Childbirth Class

    This five-hour, condensed-format class provides information on the stages of labor, anesthesia, cesarean sections, labor interventions, and comfort measures. Relaxation and breathing techniques will be covered briefly, and participants will also be scheduled for a tour of the WellSpan York Hospital Mother-Infant Center. This class is offered once monthly on a weekend and fills quickly, so please register early.  Baby Care and Breastfeeding classes are not included; however they can be taken separately.

  • Planned Cesarean Section Class

    Parents experiencing a planned cesarean will receive information on pre-operative routine, anesthesia, operative procedure and recovery at the hospital and at home.

  • Planned Cesarean Series

    This series has been created to meet the needs of parents who will be experiencing a planned cesarean. It includes:

    • Planned Cesarean Class (description above)
    • Baby Care Class
    • Breastfeeding Class

  • Refresher Class

    We offer a variety of class options for “experienced” expectant mothers and their support people to brush up on all things pregnancy and labor related. Your refresher program can be customized to meet your specific learning needs. We will contact you upon your registration to help create your customized class plan.

  • Breastfeeding

    Learn the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby along with techniques and positions to help you prepare for a positive breastfeeding experience. This class is included in the Prepared Childbirth Series or can be taken individually.

  • Baby Care

    Learn the ins and outs of baby care including feeding, safe sleep, cord care and bathing. Participants will get hands-on experience in diapering and swaddling and learn about the day-to-day care of the newborn. Participants are asked to bring a stuffed animal/doll, diaper and blanket.

    This class is included in the Prepared Childbirth Series or can be taken individually.

  • Mother-Infant Center Tour

    Take a free one-hour tour of the labor & delivery and maternity facilities at York Hospital. This tour is for adults only and is offered several times a month.

  • Grandparents Class

    Celebrate the special bond between grandparent and grandchild. Learn about what has changed in childbirth and safety of the newborn. Some topics covered include safe sleep, choking hazards and role of the grandparent. We will also review and practice infant CPR and choking management skills.

    This class also includes a tour of the Mother-Infant Center.

    Cost: $10 per person

CPR, Sibling and Other Classes

  • Safe Baby and Infant CPR Basics

    Participants will receive a room-by-room baby proofing checklist. Safety and injury prevention will also be discussed, and participants will learn the hands-on basics of infant CPR and choking situations. This class is perfect for anyone who will be caring for a new baby.

    Cost: $15 per person

  • CPR for Family & Friends

    Designed for the general public, this course includes adult, child and infant CPR and choking management. There is an optional First Aid for Children module, which includes first aid training for medical, injury, and environmental emergencies. The class is approximately 2 hours in length. The course is physically demanding, so we advise you to consult your physician prior to attending. A $10 reservation fee is required to hold your space, but will be returned at the class.   • Gentle Touch Infant Massage

    Infant massage helps parents bond with their newborn by learning how to provide a calming and loving touch. This class is suitable for babies 4 weeks to 6 months of age. Includes three, one-hour sessions and massage oil.

  • Super Sibling 1 (for ages 3-7)

    This one-hour class helps to prepare 3-7 year olds for the birth of a new sibling. Through the use of age appropriate stories and crafts, children will gain an understanding of what it means to be the big brother or sister. Children will make a small gift to give “their” new baby.

    Note: Parents are required to stay for this class.

  • Super Sibling 2 (for ages 8-12)

    This one-hour class uses age appropriate activities to help 8-12 year olds prepare for the birth of a sibling. The class will discuss feelings, safety and newborn characteristics. The children will also make a small gift to give to "their" new baby.

  • Car Seat Check

    Make sure that your child will be riding safely.  Safe Kids York County has certified child passenger safety seat technicians to assist you with the correct installation and use of your child's safety seat. You may call (888) 232-7233 to schedule an appointment or find the location nearest you. You may also register directly through this brochure.

  • Mommy Talk & Toddler Time

    New motherhood and the pressures of daily life often bring about many challenges. Not only are you learning your new role as a parent, but you are also adjusting to your changing body, relationship with your partner, daily schedule and more.  Both groups run monthly and are designed to connect new moms with useful information in an environment that allows for social interaction and sharing. Each month, these groups will focus on a topic geared towards new moms and allow time for open discussion.  All new moms are welcome. Feel free to bring your infant or toddler with you.

    Toddler Time is for mothers of children ages 1-3 and meets the first Monday of the month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mommy Talk meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Both groups meet at WellSpan York Hospital Childbirth & Family Education in the Queensgate Towne Center.  Contact Wendy McDowell RN, BSN, IBCLC for more information at (717) 851-4305.

  • Prenatal Yoga

    Yoga is an ideal way for mothers-to-be to prepare for birth and labor, stay healthy, and cope with the demands placed on a woman's body during pregnancy. With the practice of yoga we uncover a strong and supple body, an enhanced ability to breathe and relax, and increased body awareness.  Classes are held Monday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at WellSpan York Hospital Childbirth & Family Education in the Queensgate Towne Center.  Please call The Center for Mind Body Health at (717) 851-5590 for more information and to register.

  • Baby Sign

    Baby Sign can help your child communicate before he or she can talk.  This class is designed for children ages 4-24 months and their caregivers.  The class helps to decrease your child's frustration, stimulate intellectual development and strengthen the parent-child bond. Grandparents and other caregivers are welcome to attend.  Call (717) 851-2241 to register.

  • Safe Sitter

    Safe Sitter is a medically accurate program that teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children.  This class teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills and appropriate responses to medical emergencies.  Registration fee covers eight hours of instruction; the Safe Sitter Manual and cinch sac babysitting bag (which includes bandage dispenser and mini flashlight); and completion card.

  • Cancellation more than one week prior to start of class: Full refund.
  • Less than one week prior to start of class: Full refund less $15 processing fee.
  • After first class date: 75% of fee.
  • No refunds after second class date.

Insurance

Medicaid/Access, United HC Community Plan for Families, Amerihealth Caritas Health Plan, Gateway, Aetnea Better Health MA, Healthy York Network and UPMC for You all fully cover the Prepared Childbirth Series, Condensed Childbirth Class and Refresher Class.
