What is the role of a Genetic Counselor?

WellSpan's Genetic Counselors provide information and support to individuals who may be at risk for a variety of inherited genetic conditions, as well as families who have members with genetic disorders. Our counselors can:

  • Identify families at risk for genetic disorders
  • Investigate the problem present in the family
  • Interpret information about the disorder
  • Analyze inheritance patterns and risks for recurrence
  • Review available options with family members if a risk is discovered

Our counselors also provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates and refer patients and families to community and state support services. They serve as educators and a resource for patients, health care professionals and the community.

Wish WellSpan, physicians and patients are choosing a partner who will guide educate, coordinate and provide individualized care for you every step of the way.
