Autism Spectrum Disorders
Multidisciplinary Autism Program (MAP)
Autism is a developmental disorder that typically appears during the first two years of life. It is a neurological disorder that affects brain function, specifically the areas of socialization, communication and forming relationships.
Recognizing the growing need for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) services and their coordination in York and Adams Counties, WellSpan Behavioral Health and WellSpan Pediatric Neurology worked together to create a program that offers diagnostic evaluations and coordination of care for children with suspected ASD. Children referred for evaluations initially receive psychological testing. Depending on those results, they may also receive psychiatric and neurological examinations. The program supervisor meets with the family, arranges appointments and serves as the central hub for the management of a child’s treatment. The coordinator also interfaces with local care providers such as therapists and teachers and provides recommendations highlighting strengths and current needs.
Interested families should call (717) 851-6340. Though not required, parents are encouraged to have their primary care provider refer them to the program for consultation. Families are required to come to an initial screening visit before an appointment for formal evaluation is scheduled.

Asperger's Group Program
Children with this disorder experience the inability to understand the feelings of others, abnormal single-mindedness, lack of verbal skills, insensitivity to social cues, withdrawal and obsessive indulgence in special interests. This group teaches the child social skills. Each week, the group introduces a specific skill and offers activities to support the development of the skill. The group is ongoing.
