WellSpan Gastroenterology

A gastroenterologist is a doctor who specializes in diseases of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. Patients may need special tests to help the doctor find these diseases and know how to treat them. Some of the more common blood tests, stool exams and x-ray studies may not provide enough information. A gastroenterologist is trained to perform the special tests and procedures needed.

It is important that our patients understand these tests and procedures. We want you to know why you may need them, what they involve, and any risks there may be. "Informed consent" means you are agreeing to have the tests or procedure after you know these details. This information will help you understand and make your decision. The doctor will have discussed this information with you as well. You will then be asked to sign an informed consent form. Please take the time to read the form carefully and if you have any questions, make sure that they are answered before you sign the form.

We perform the following procedures:

  • Screening Colonoscopy: A colonoscopy allows the physician to examine the walls of the large intestine for polyps, inflammation, and sources of blood loss.  This study has become the cornerstone of colon cancer screening. Click here to learn more.

  • Upper Endoscopy (EGD): An EGD examines the esophagus, stomach, and beginning of the small intestine.  Ulcers, celiac disease, and complications from GERD are typically diagnosed during this exam.  Click here to learn more,

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): ERCP uses endoscopy and real time X-ray to evaluate and treat various diseases of the pancreas and biliary tree.  Click here to learn more.

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): EUS uses ultrasound waves to exam and safely biopsy a variety of internal organs.  Pancreatic, esophageal, and rectal cancers as well as pancreatic cysts are often examined using EUS. Click here to learn more.
