Highly qualified team of professionals works together to come up with solutions
More than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 64 experience frequent back pain.
Less than 10 percent of back pain patients require surgical intervention. For the rest, medical treatment is required. The big question is, “What type of medical treatment will be most effective for the individual?”
To help answer this question, the WellSpan Spine Center offers a comprehensive approach to spinal care that brings together a full range of treatment options.
With experts in physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurosurgery, pain and lifestyle interventions and complementary medicine, the WellSpan Spine Center can coordinate all the diagnostic tests and treatments needed.
Using a holistic approach, physicians and staff members help minimize pain, restore function and improve quality of life.
“After not improving from a conservative approach with their family physician, many back pain sufferers are confused about their options,” said Lori Clark, administrator of neurosciences. “They don’t know where to turn.”
Clark said the WellSpan Spine Center offers the expertise to triage patients to the most appropriate resource, help them navigate the system and coordinate treatment.
“We want the process to be as quick and smooth as possible,” said Clark.
“We have a highly qualified team of professionals working together to come up with solutions for patients,” said Deborah Bernal, M.D., a physiatrist who is board certified in Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine.
The WellSpan Spine Center offers a rapid review of a patient’s medical condition and assessment.
Dr. Bernal reviews a patient’s medical history and promptly determines the next step.
Recommendations may include seeing a spine surgeon, rehabilitation physician or pain intervention specialist. Diagnostic tests such as an X-ray, EMG, MRI scan or CT scan also may be recommended.
Whatever the recommendation, the WellSpan Spine Center coordinates the care from start to finish.
A nurse navigator works one-on-one with patients to coordinate their care before, during and after treatment.
She provides education, coordinates appointments and testing and follows up with the patient’s primary care physician.
Patients may call the WellSpan Spine Center directly at 812-2212 or be referred by their family physician.
