20 years of expert heart care in Chambersburg

This year, the catheterization lab at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital celebrates its 20th year of saving lives and hearts in Franklin County.

In 2004, Dr. Aylmer Tang became the first physician for the Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program in a single-room lab within the hospital.

"Before coming to Chambersburg, I did some research and realized that there was a large population of patients who would benefit from local care and not have to travel more than 40 miles to the nearest alternative," said Dr. Tang. "More importantly, I knew we could provide prompt care for patients who were unstable or those in a situation where a transfer of more than an hour away could result in death or more damage to their heart."

The early seven-member team was small but mighty. Christa Hoffeditz, nurse practitioner, and Dr. Arshad Safi joined the team during its early months. They continue to contribute to the award-winning care provided today.

Sue Rosenberry, director of clinical services at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, was another early member of the team.

"It is truly remarkable how far the team has come since those early days. I have been at the hospital since 1989 and continue to be proud of the new and advanced services we can provide our community," said Rosenberry.

Today, the cath lab sits just inside the King Street entrance to the hospital and has expanded to three procedural rooms. The team has grown to 20 team members, 16 procedural team members, and four dedicated to pre-and post-operative care.

"Over the years, we have been happy to offer more advanced options to our patients. We continue to try to get the latest technologies to the lab. I think that the community has been very supportive of us, and they truly appreciate what we do for our patients and their loved ones," Dr. Tang added.

The Cath lab now offers additional services including transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), cardioversions, and electrophysiology procedures including pacemaker implants, ICD implants, electrophysiology studies, and some ablations.
