WellSpan Good Samaritan, WellSpan Philhaven to no longer hire tobacco users

WellSpan Health announced today that WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital and WellSpan Philhaven will align with the regional health system’s Tobacco/Nicotine-Free Hiring Policy and will no longer hire staff who use tobacco, as of Jan. 1, 2017.

Under the policy, anyone who is offered a position to work at one of WellSpan’s facilities and patient care locations will be required to participate in a nicotine screening. Individuals will not be hired if they test positive for nicotine, but may be hired if they are enrolled in tobacco cessation. Additionally, if they test positive, they may apply again for employment in 12 months.

The policy only applies to new hires, and will not impact the employment status of anyone who currently works for the health system. The hiring policy reflects the commitment of southcentral Pennsylvania’s largest integrated health system to promoting healthy lifestyle and lifelong wellness.

“We are committed to working as one health system in the care of our patients and for the benefit of the communities we serve,” said Robert Batory, senior vice president, WellSpan Health, and chief human resources officer. “Aligning our policies throughout the health system, and extending them out to our new partners, is consistent with this mission.”

“We are a health care organization, and our nicotine-free hiring policy is consistent with our mission of promoting wellness and healthy lifestyle habits,” Batory added.

Tobacco is the leading cause of premature and preventable death in the United States.

WellSpan’s 2015 Community Health Needs Assessments showed that 16 percent of adults in Lebanon County and 12 percent in northern Lancaster County identified themselves as regular smokers. These figures do not include adults who use other forms of tobacco, or minors who are tobacco users.

WellSpan first implemented a Tobacco/Nicotine-Free Hiring Policy effective on Jan. 1, 2015, prior to the two Lebanon County-based organizations becoming part of WellSpan.

The same policy now applies to the hiring of staff members at WellSpan Good Samaritan and WellSpan Philhaven, beginning with any applicant who has been offered a position, but who has not yet had his or her first day of work as of Jan. 1, 2017.

WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital joined WellSpan Health on July 1, 2015; and WellSpan Philhaven, one of the nation’s largest behavioral health organizations, joined the health system on Jan. 1, 2016.
