Clinical partnership brings Johns Hopkins surgeons to WellSpan York Hospital

WellSpan Health and the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center announced today a collaboration that will improve local access to expert pediatric surgical care.

The two health care organizations will collaborate to bring Johns Hopkins General Pediatric Surgery to York. The new surgical practice, located at 300 Pine Grove Commons, in York, will open and begin seeing patients on Thursday, Sept. 1.

Johns Hopkins Children’s Center board-certified pediatric surgeons will be available for consultative services at the WellSpan York practice location on a weekly basis. Surgical procedures will be performed at WellSpan York Hospital. Starting in October, all eight surgeons will be available 24/7 for on-call consultative services at WellSpan York Hospital.

“WellSpan’s collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center will bring a cadre of specialized pediatric surgeons to the York/Adams community, ensuring that many children in our communities who need pediatric surgical care will no longer need to be transported to hospitals outside our area,” says David Turkewitz, M.D., chairman and education coordinator of pediatrics and director of pediatric emergency medicine for WellSpan York Hospital.

“It is safer for the child, and it will allow parents to better focus on the needs of their child, rather than worry about how to get to an unfamiliar hospital, where to park, where to stay, where to eat and how to navigate the hospital,” he adds. “This is a win for our patients and our community.”

The practice will offer the latest minimally invasive and surgical treatments for all aspects of surgery for neonatal, infant, child and adolescent conditions. Additionally, children with conditions that are rare or require the expertise of additional pediatric subspecialists can seek continued care at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

“We share a common goal with our colleagues at WellSpan, which is to provide the best pediatric surgical care in southcentral Pennsylvania,” says David Hackam, M.D., Ph.D., surgeon-in-chief for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. “Our shared vision is to ensure that whenever possible, pediatric surgery should be delivered in the community where the child and family live to make the experience as stress-free as possible. For more complex pediatric surgical cases, we seek to build on our existing relationships and to ensure rapid and easy access to all of the services available at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.”

The following Johns Hopkins surgeons will staff the new Johns Hopkins General Pediatric Surgery practice in York:

  • David J. Hackam, M.D., Ph.D., surgeon-in-chief for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center
  • Samuel M. Alaish, M.D., surgical director of the Center for Intestinal Rehabilitation and Cure Using Science at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center
  • Alejandro V. Garcia, M.D., surgical director of the pediatric ECMO program at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center
