About the Program

This experience offers the opportunity to incorporate the Family Medicine perspective into the care of inpatient and outpatient services. The acting intern will admit and manage patients under the supervision of senior Family Medicine residents and faculty. The acting intern will have the opportunity to assist in the care of women during labor and delivery as well as newborns delivered from the Family Medicine. Besides daily hands-on bedside teaching rounds, with the resident team, there are formal teaching rounds conducted during the week. Our goal is an integrated approach involving all aspects of inpatient Family Medicine care.

Objective

  1. To practice advanced inpatient & outpatient management skills
  2. Gain exposure to each component of the health care delivery system that the patient has to experience
  3. Improve understanding of the importance of the doctor-patient health care team relationship
  4. Understand how good primary care improves outcomes and efficiency

How to Apply

Visiting medical students may apply for electives no sooner than four months prior to completion of all third year requirements.

Applications must include:

  • Downloaded and printed Medical Student Elective Application for a fourth-year elective at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital
  • Proof of your current health insurance. (a copy of current insurance card must be attached)
  • Proof of required immunizations. (a copy of immunization record  must be attached) Since flu season is October to March, you must provide proof of a current flu vaccine if you are accepted for a rotation during those months.
  • Proof of Malpractice insurance.  (proof of malpractice insurance  must be attached)
  • Student’s photo.

Guidelines for Completing and Submitting your Application

  • If you are accepted for a rotation, you will receive a confirmation email. Completing an application does not constitute acceptance of the requested rotation.
  • If all required documentation is not submitted at the time of application, the process will be delayed. We will not notify you of any missing documents. 
  • Registration for an elective with Family Medicine at the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital will be confirmed after the appropriate application materials have been received and approved. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
  • Electives are filled on a space-available basis. Due to limited availability, Family Medicine at the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital has the right to limit the number of rotations per student.

Cancellation of Participation by a Student

All visiting students are asked to remember that schedules for House Staff and Attending Physician are planned several months in advance. Final confirmation of acceptance is binding, unless unforeseen circumstances make participation impossible; should this happen, students must notify Sally Bachman in Family Medicine at the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital immediately of their inability to participate.
