Areas of Clinical Emphasis

Residency MaternityWomen's Health

Residents have the opportunity to follow patients at Lebanon Family Health Services, a local women’s health clinic that provides education, nutrition, and reproductive health services to uninsured and underinsured families of Lebanon County with emphasis on women, infants, and children. The program provides comprehensive prenatal care from conception through delivery, family planning services, and gynecology services including infectious disease management. Residents receive instruction and supervision during procedures including Pap smears, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion, and obstetrical procedures. Obstetrical training at the busy labor and delivery ward of WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital is “family medicine oriented” as taught by our core residency faculty. All residents are uniformly ALSO and neonatal resuscitation certified.

Newborn Care

In parallel to obstetrical training, residents have the opportunity to receive instruction and training in the busy newborn nursery at The Good Samaritan Hospital. All residents receive certification in PALS and neonatal resuscitation and actively utilize these skills as the primary physicians, with supervision, attending all average risk caesarian section deliveries.

Residency CvuInpatient Medicine

On the Family Medicine Inpatient Service at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, residents take ownership of their patients’ care with faculty attending physicians acting as consultants and a safety net rather than as primary managers. Training includes challenging critical care, cardiac, pediatric, and general internal medicine cases.

Evidence Based Medicine and Information Mastery

In today’s medical world, it is crucial that physicians learn to manage the vast ocean of medical information. How do I formulate the best clinical questions? How do I find the best answers to these clinical questions quickly at the point of care? How do I stay up-to date with the most current evidence? At WellSpan, residents learn the answers to these questions and cultivate a spirit of life-long learning. It’s not simply a search for the best scientific evidence but rather how to best translate the evidence into clinical practice to attain the best outcomes for our patients. Both as a common thread woven throughout the curriculum and during regularly scheduled training sessions, residents learn to be information masters, to assess literature for relevance and validity and to hone their clinical curiosity.
