What is a perinatologist?

A perinatologist is a physician who has been trained to manage high-risk pregnancies. In addition to medical school and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, training includes a fellowship in perinatology. Perinatologists must be board-certified in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

What is a perinatology consultation?

A perinatology consultation is a one-on-one discussion between a patient and a perinatologist. During this meeting, the physician gathers information that is important for the patient's current or future pregnancies. The physician then explains to the patient how her pregnancy may be at risk and makes recommendations, including screening tests, diagnostic testing and preventive measures.

What are some reasons to have a perinatology consultation?

There are many reasons for patients to consider having a perinatology consultation, including a previous illness such as hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, kidney disease, or cancer. Women who have had a history of problem pregnancies, such as premature labor, premature birth, multiple pregnancy losses, or stillbirths also may be referred for a consultation. Couples who are planning a pregnancy may come for a pre-conception consultation to discuss similar issues.
