If you have experienced kidney failure, proper ongoing treatment is absolutely essential. WellSpan Dialysis combines state-of-the-art technology with caring professionals who are committed to providing the highest-quality dialysis services available.
Pre-Renal Care
For individuals who have been diagnosed with kidney disease and have developed anemia, we offer a pre-renal clinic to aid in anemia management. Medications are given that will encourage the patient's body to produce more blood cells and manage their anemia. Your physician will determine when it is appropriate for a referral to the pre-renal clinic.
Dialysis Treatment Choices
The cornerstone of treatment for kidney failure is dialysis. WellSpan Dialysis offers a variety of treatment options to best fit the patient and their lifestyle. Some of the options are available in an outpatient setting, while others offer home-based options.
Outpatient Treatment
Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis uses a machine to clean wastes from the blood after the kidneys have failed. Blood travels through tubing to a dialyzer. Using a dialysis machine and the dialyzer, wastes and extra fluid are removed. The cleaned blood then goes back into the body. Patients must usually do this type of treatment three times a week for four hours at a time. This type of treatment is usually done at an outpatient clinic.
Home Self-Care Treatment
Home Peritoneal Dialysis
There are two types of home peritoneal dialysis treatment options available:
- Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) CAPD is a type of internal dialysis that uses the peritoneal membrane within the body to remove wastes and water from the blood, instead of filtering the blood using a hemodialysis machine. The dialysate drains into and out of the peritoneal cavity by gravity several times a day.
- Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD) CCPD is a form of dialysis that uses an automatic cycling machine to infuse and drain dialysate from the peritoneal cavity several times during the night while the patient sleeps.
Home Short-Daily Hemodialysis
A patient, with the assistance of a partner, uses a small portable waterless machine to perform hemodialysis at home for 2 - 2.5 hours six days a week.
Home Nocturnal Hemodialysis
A patient uses a smaller conventional machine to perform hemodialysis at home three nights a week while sleeping.
