York Hospital Childbirth Education Classes

The Parent Education Program at York Hospital helps to prepare couples for childbirth and parenthood. It encourages families to become involved in this memorable experience by reaching beyond childbirth to help prepare for family adjustments. Programs are taught by experienced registered nurses in the obstetrics department. Each has specific training in parent education.

Childbirth Preparation Class Offerings

Prepared Childbirth Series - Education is power. Empower yourself as you prepare for the arrival of your little one. This four session series covers all aspects of labor and birth, comfort measures, anesthesia choices, relaxation and breathing techniques, and Cesarean delivery. A separate Baby Care class and Tour of the Mother Infant Center is also included. $65.00 per couple

Condensed Childbirth Class - Life is busy. Get the education you need in a condensed session. This five hour class covers such oncepts of labor and birth, comfort measures, anesthesia choices, relaxation and breathing techniques, and Cesarean delivery with a brief practice of relaxation and breathing techniques.  separate Baby Care Class and Tour of the Mother Infant Center are included. $40.00 per couple. Offered every six weeks on the weekend.

Monday 6:30 - 9 p.m. - (Monday class held at Stonebridge in Shrewsbury)
Tuesday 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Wednesday 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Saturday sessions offered every other month.

* Class dates are determined by your due date.

Special Tours and Classes

Mother-Infant Center Tour
Take a free one-hour tour of the labor, delivery and maternity facilities at York Hospital. This tour is for adults only.  The tour is offered several times a month. 

Maybe a Baby
Designed for couples thinking about the possibility of a pregnancy, this class gives you tips on how to prepare your mind, body, relationship and home for a pregnancy and new baby.  This prelude to Prepared Childbirth is a wonderful source of information to empower yourself for the hard work that is pregnancy. The importance of preconception health is emphasized and discussed in depth. $10 a couple

Refresher Class
Not your first time?  Been a while? Different hospital? Brush up on your breathing and relaxation skills and review the birth process. Offered Friday evenings. $15 per couple.

Super Siblings 1
This one hour class helps to prepare 3-7 year olds for the birth of a new sibling. Through the use of age appropriate materials and crafts, children will gain an understanding of what it means to be the Big Brother or Big Sister and how that makes them special.  Parents are required to stay.  $15 per child

Super Siblings 2
This one hour class provides age appropriate activities for 8-12 year olds to help them prepare for the birth of a sibling.  The class will discuss feelings, safety and newborn characteristics.  The children will also make a small gift to give to "their" new baby.  Parents are required to stay. $15 per child.

Gentle Touch Infant Massage
Life is rushed.  Spend some tender moments with your newborn. Bond with your infant by learning how to provide the calming and loving touch of infant massage. This class is for babies 4 weeks to 6 months of age.  Includes three one-hour sessions and massage oil.  $30 per family.

Infant CPR Class
This class provides an opportunity for new parents, grandparents and caregivers to learn infant CPR and safety and help to provide a safe environment for your newborn. $15 per person.

Breastfeeding Class
Learn the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby along with techniques and positions to help you prepare for a positive breastfeeding experience.  This class is perfect for first time moms or those who just need a refresher. This two-hour session is taught by a certified lactation consultant.  $10 per couple. (Partners are encouraged to attend)

Breastfeeding Beyond the Basics
Gain support from other moms while a certified lactation consultant provides helpful information on topics such as milk supply; pumping and storing breast milk; going back to work; and transitioning to bottle feeding.  This class is appropriate for mothers with babies from 3-8 weeks old.  Classes are held on the third Tuesday of every month from 12:30-2 p.m. feel free to bring your lunch.  $15 per person.

Baby Care
Diapering, swaddling and crying...oh my.  Learn the ins and outs of baby care in this informative and up to date class.  Participants will get hands on experience in diapering and swaddling and learn about the day-to-day care of the newborn. This class is offered free with the Prepared Childbirth Series and Condensed Childbirth class but can be taken individually. This class is perfect for expectant parents and grandparents.   Please bring a teddy bear/baby doll, blanket and diaper to use for practice.  $15 a couple.

Grandparents Class
My how so much has changed!!  Come and learn the latest in safety techniques and baby care as well as insight into the labor process.  This two hour class for expectant grandparents also includes a tour of the mother-infant center.  $8 per person.

Mommy Talk
New motherhood and the pressures of daily life often bring about many challenges.  Not only are you learning your new role as a parent, but you are also adjusting to your changing body, relationship with your partner, daily schedule and more.  Mommy Talk is a monthly group designed to connect new moms with useful information in an environment that allows for social interaction and sharing.  Each month, the group focuses on a topic geared towards new moms and allows time for open discussion.  All new moms are welcome.  Feel free to hold your baby in your arms if you don't have childcare.  This group meets the third Monday of the month from 7-8 p.m. at Wellspan Women's Center, 35 Monument Road, and second floor classroom.

We encourage you to register prior to, or as soon as you begin your fifth month of pregnancy. The most popular dates and times fill quickly.
