VNA Volunteer Opportunities

Hospice Volunteers

Hospice volunteers are available to Hospice patients and their caregivers to provide support as they are coping with end of life care.

The Hospice Volunteers may support the patient and caregiver by providing:

  • A listening ear for emotional support
  • Companionship for the patient
  • Respite for caregivers
  • Assistance with errands

A Patient Care Volunteer is assigned according to the need of the patient and their family and the specific talents and availability of the volunteer. There is no charge for Hospice Volunteer Services.

Volunteers Help the Caregiver

It is important to remember that the caregiver is handling many demands simultaneously. The help of the volunteer not only allows the caregiver time to attend to personal responsibilities, but also to enjoy activities that help to restore the caregiver's coping ability. The caregiver may use this supportive assistance to run errands, sleep, attend to personal business, keep personal appointments, attend church or synagogue, attend social events, relax or read.

Volunteers Help the Patient

The Hospice Volunteer can interact with a patient in many ways. A volunteer may become a confidante, someone who listens, a hand holder, a conversationalist, or a friend with whom to share time. Sometimes the biggest help of all is just being there.
