Volunteer Opportunities at WellSpan Health

ATTENTION TEEN VOLUNTEER APPLICANTS!

There have been great concerns with the H1N1 virus and the effect this has on our patients, staff and visitors.

WellSpan's leadership and the Volunteer Services Department have determined we can best support the protection of the most by temporarily suspending our Teen Volunteer Program.  Once restrictions have been lifted, we will continue to allow Teens to apply to be Volunteers with WellSpan Health.

We regret this step but the health of our patients and the community is our top priority.  We will update our website accordingly when the program is reactivated.

  • Adult Volunteer Application
  • Volunteers play a vital role in helping WellSpan Health fulfill its mission in providing accessible, high quality, affordable health care services that improve the health and well-being of the people it serves.

    Who volunteers?

    Many different types of people...

    • teens, college students or adults exploring careers
    • people seeking "job" experience or training
    • retirees wanting to keep active and share their compassion and knowledge
    • adults, couples and families wishing to broaden their horizons while playing an active role in helping their community
    • former patients wanting to "give back"
    Why should I volunteer?

Receiving the personal satisfaction of helping others, making new friends, learning new skills, exploring a career, staying up-to-date with the changes in providing health care are just a few of the rewards you will discover as a volunteer.

What can I do as a volunteer?

Your assignment will depend on your interest, availability, skills or experience. Assignments at WellSpan Health sites in York County include assistance to: York Hospital, Apple Hill Medical Center, Edgar Square, Prospect Commerce Center and WellSpan Medical Group offices; and, in Adams County to: Gettysburg Hospital, Adams County Women's Health, Herr's Ridge Outpatient Center and the future WellSpan Adams Medical Center. Volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks, such as:

    • Clerical: Chart assembling, filing, mailings, data entry, copying
    • Community Outreach: Health fairs, screenings, education
    • Courier: Intensive Care units, mail delivery, Medical Records, Pharmacy
    • Patient Contact: Emergency Department, flower delivery, patient visitor, patient aide, patient transporter
    • Public Contact: Greeter, tour guide, information desk, receptionist, Hospitality Shop
    Will I receive training?

Training is an integral part of your volunteer experience. In addition to a general orientation to familiarize you with the responsibilities and benefits of volunteering for WellSpan Health, you will receive either specialized training or on-the-job training. Volunteers are also required to complete  personal safety training annually.

    Will I qualify?

You must be at least 14 years of age (and have completed the eighth grade). Applicants should be dependable, responsible, friendly and willing to make a firm commitment to at least 50 hours of volunteer service and adhere to the policies and procedures of WellSpan. Health screenings are required for some positions.

    Additional requirements include:

    • Criminal background check (on all adult applicants)
    • Child abuse clearance check (on all adult applicants placed in positions with pediatric contact)
