About WellSpan Health Research
Emig Research Center at York Hospital
The WellSpan Health research program focuses on applied and translational research addressing health education and health care improvement, patient safety and applying new technology for patient care benefit. Research at WellSpan Health is designed to provide an environment of clinical excellence and be an important driver of practicing evidence-based medicine, achieving the highest standards of patient care, and providing excellent training to the healthcare providers of tomorrow.
WellSpan researchers are ideally positioned to ensure that patients and the community benefit from advances in research. Nearly all WellSpan researchers spend the majority of their time taking care of patients and teaching in clinical areas. This dual role makes their research centered on patients, and permits ready application of research results to patient care and education.
York Hospital and WellSpan have a long history of achievements in clinical research, health professional education, improvement and innovation. There are currently more than 100 Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved research protocols underway among the various health care campuses, physician offices and health professional education programs provided by WellSpan.
Currently, WellSpan Health partners with government, industry and universities by participating in dozens of multi-center research studies at any given time. These include comparative studies of therapy, diagnostic testing, new drugs and devices, which span the spectrum of cancer care and prevention, cardiac care, infectious disease, surgical and trauma care. Research units within our service lines and residency programs also partner with each other to design and conduct their own research on clinical safety and quality, and our researchers publish about 50 scientific articles each year in the medical, nursing and allied health literature.
