It's not uncommon to have questions about blood donation. What most people don't realize is how simple it really is. The entire process of donating blood takes approximately one hour and begins with a brief interview. A mini-physical is the next step, during which the donor's temperature, pulse and blood pressure are checked. A test for anemia is also performed.

After the screening process and mini-physical are complete, it is time for the actual donation of blood. The donor relaxes while approximately one pint of blood is collected. The actual donation takes approximately five to 10 minutes. Afterward, donors rest and enjoy light refreshments. They may then leave and resume their normal activities for the day.

Statistics
  • The blood collected by WellSpan Blood Donor Services is used to help patients in our community.
  • One donation could provide the blood necessary to transfuse one baby seven to nine times.
  • More than 25,000 units of blood and blood products are transfused annually at York and Gettysburg Hospitals.
  • One out of every 10 people entering a hospital will need blood.

There is no substitute for you. Our community relies on the generosity of volunteer blood donors.
